Did you know that a kilt can be pleated two different ways? A kilt can be pleated either to the stripe or the sett. Pleating to the Stripe consists of choosing a vertical stripe within the sett and folding each pleat along this line. This type of pleating will result in a distinctive difference in appearance from the front of the kilt to the back. When Pleating to the sett, the integrity of the pattern in the tartan is maintained from the front to the rear of the kilt. This is achieved by folding the back of the tartan by its sett rather than a line in the sett as mentioned previously.
